This page details the contents of the book ''Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down''...originally written by Bob Weaver, meterologist at a Miami, Florida TV station. Some of the pun dates were based on actual events...while others were basically made up.
On Sept. 2, 1898, a dozen bathers began the first swimming race. It started at the stroke of twelve.
On Sept. 3, 1891, wrought iron was first used for decoration. People were very grate full.
On Sept. 4, 1902, wooden shoes were invented, and a lot of people lumbered around in them.
On Sept. 5, 1958, pocket sized tape recorders were manufactured for people liked small talk.
On Sept. 6, 1880, a book on sea mammals was written. Everyone said ''Whale, Whale.''
On Sept. 7, 1868, pantsuits became fashionable for women, but a lot of ladies tried to skirt the issue.
On Sept. 8, 1956, strip mining was banned in Boston.
On Sept. 9, 1933, the first Drum Major was used in a parade. He had a large following.
